Before medical school, Dr. Izakson worked for a dozen years as a staffer and freelance environmental reporter for newspapers, magazines and on-line media. Her work was recognized with awards from the Maine Press Association and the Oregon Society of Professional Journalists. She published book chapters in Feeling the Heat: Dispatches from the Frontlines of Climate Change (Routledge, 2004) and Green Living: The E Magazine Handbook for Living Lightly on the Earth (Plume, 2005). She remains a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists and currently is working on a book about gardening with medicinal plants called GardenMedicine.
